Nokia E90 Review

I’m sure the Nokia E90 reminds you of the Communicator series, or maybe that’s just me. But anyhow, both of these phones have one thing in common, Nokia designed them with a business phone perspective. Although the E90 differs greatly either by it Symbian S60 OS, or the fact that it has a 3.2 MegapPixel camera. I will try my best in this review to show you what it’s all about!

Design And Feeling

The first thing that you feel when you look at the device is that it’s HUGE. But if you don’t mind haveing a brick in your pocket then this won’t bother you at all. The external displays resolution is 240 x 320 giving it a nice look. In the right hand corner of the phone you will find the On/Off button which is easily pressed but wont likely be pressed by accident. One thing you will realize is that there is no pencil button, since it has been combined into the “#” button. So you can mark and highlight stuff using it. But one thing i really liked is that to mark things you just press it once and the file gets marked, unlike previous phones with the pencil key you had to hold it down to mark something. On the bottome the miniUSB port and charger port are located along with the headpone jack.On the right side of the device you will find the infrared port, camera button, and voice key.One more thing, the keypad is very comfortable to use and the D-Pad buttons can all be accessed very easily without any mistake presses.

Camera
The phone comes with a 3.2 Megapixel camera, which is pretty good considering that it’s a business phone. The camera has similar features to other new nokia devices like whiteness/contrast/different modes and some digital zoom. The LED flash may be useless but it’s better than nothing, and who takes pictures in total darkness anyway? Here are some images taken with the auto setting:

More About Camera

The things that really makes think is why sometimes Nokia choose 2.0 MegaPixel cameras and sometimes 3.2 MegaPixel cameras. Take the N81 for example, it’s a pretty cool phone with some new features but because of the camera you are blinded of everything else. Nokia launched the N81 as a gaming phone maybe that’s why they didn’t choose 3.2 Mp, but then why did the E90 come with one? Anyway, here are three videos showing you the camera startup speed image processing speed, and a video sample from the Nokia E90. (Click Image To View)

Here is a video sample taken with the phone:

Overall the E90 has a very good camera and I’d give it a 8.5/10

Music

The E90 has two speakers both located at the back of the phone. The problem with this is that when you rest the phone on a table the sound gets all muffled up. Ignoring this fact you will realize that the sound is just amazing! It may not me loud for : some ears, but it was enough for me. Also the sound is very pure and you’ll just not want to stop listening! The E90 has the standard S60 3rd edition music player which has some options like sorting your music by Artists,Albums,Track Lists,Genres, and Composers. It also has some equalizer setting like Pop,Rock, and Jazz. Some thing nice about the phone is that is has a radio, just in case you get bored of your whole music library.

Peformance

All I can say about this phone is that it’s fast!! You won’t ever feel that an app is not responding or that something is taking too long. Phone startup is also pretty fast, but I couldn’t measure the exact startup time since there pin code was on (Not my phone, so can’t deactivate it). Something that i thought was very fast was the bluetooth transfer rate, or maybe that’s just me :-p

Inner Display & Keypad

One thing you’ll fall in love at first sight is the inner display… It very nice to look at and has an amazing resolution of 800 x 352. Videos look amazing and watching a movie on the inner display is pure eye candy! Since E90 is a businees phone Nokia decided to provide it with a Full Qwerty keyboard, which is very comfortable to use. Something you’ll immediately realize is that the D-Pad is the same on the outside and inside of the phone, both are fingerprint magnets, but it’s not a problem since only a small part is metal. The phone feels very strong and solid and produces no creeks or noises as hard as you try, and when you first hold the phone you immediately feel that your holding something worth what you paid for. Although on the outside of the phone there is a metal lining around the found which easily collects fingerprints, but a quick wipe does the job. Sometimes if you touch the outside screes you’ll see some smudges but these can easily be cleaned since the keypad and screen are all very flat and at the same height, something I’d like to have in every phone.

Final Conclusion

All in all, the E90 is a spectacular phone. Which I would buy in a flash,if only it didn’t cost so much and was so big. But if these things don’t bother you that this is the phone for you!

Pros: -Very fast phone

-Speakers all loud and clear

-Has GPS

-3.2 Mp Camera

-S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1

-Comfortable keypad

Cons: -Very expensive

-Huge dimensions

-Attacks a bit of fingerprints

-When opening phone it opens at an uncomfortable angle

-GPS takes way too much time to lock on (10 Minutes)

-Speakers location muffles up sound when phone is resting on a table

  5. Nice review. That picture of the E90 on your laptop keyboard just makes an impressive statement for what can be done in such a small device.

I’m hoping that there is a E91 that fixes a few of the softwware and hardware niggles, and adds some US-fun to it so that we here can play with it in all its fun too 😀
